A crown is a restoration that covers, or "caps," a tooth. It is one of the oldest cosmetic dentistry procedures. The crown restores the tooth to its normal shape and size. A crown is necessary when a tooth is broken down and a filling cannot solve the problem.
If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks. Crowns are also used to restore a tooth when there isn't enough of the tooth remaining to provide support for a large filling, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth.
Crowns require removal of more tooth structure; hence they cover more of the tooth than veneers. Crowns are customarily indicated for teeth that have sustained significant loss of structure or to replace missing teeth.
How should I take care of my crown?
- Avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects.
- Avoid teeth grinding.
- brush twice a day.
- Use floss or interdental cleaners to clean between your teeth.
- Visit your dentist every 6 months.
